A program can deliver its content and path without a cohort. Add a cohort when people start together; add a group when some enrollments need a smaller operational circle. An enrollment connects one person to one program, optionally to a cohort. Group membership changes neither the enrollment's program nor its frozen path version.
| Resource | Mike Academy example | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Program | Agentic AI Developer | Owns training content and milestone pool |
| Path | Agentic AI Developer journey | Selects and orders milestones; enrollment keeps its assigned version |
| Cohort | October Builders | Optional promotion with phase, capacity and schedule |
| Enrollment | One member taking Agentic AI Developer | Own progress, deadlines and optional cohort assignment |
| Group | Peer Lab | Operational subset of eligible enrollments, not another cohort |
Mike Academy can deliver Agentic AI Developer continuously. In that case, skip cohort creation and enroll people directly in the program. To run an October intake, an owner/admin opens Management → Cohorts, chooses the program and creates October Builders. Set its time zone; dates are optional. The new cohort is a Draft. Create cohort gives integrations the exact fields.
Before intake opens, configure optional hard capacity and any phases the team uses. Cohort status proceeds through draft → open → active → completed → archived. Phase position is a separate operating fact, not simply the calculated calendar week; moving it requires a reason. Use the cohort cockpit to inspect the current state and enrolled people.
Enroll a person in Agentic AI Developer with October Builders only if that intake should own the participation. Check the resulting enrollment's program, optional cohort and assigned primary path. Enroll a person permits a null cohort and a null path when no primary path exists. For a smaller circle, create Peer Lab in Management → Groups and add the enrollment to it. The Groups API exposes the membership command; check matching program/cohort scope, capacity and an open enrollment first.
| Action | Owner/admin | Organization-scoped program director |
|---|---|---|
| Create program, course, lesson, milestone or task | Yes | No |
| Read program content for assigned work | Yes | Yes, within scope |
| Operate paths and groups | Yes | Yes, within assignment and resource scope |
| Operate cohort delivery | Yes | Permitted only where the cohort action and assignment allow it; check the endpoint's authorization table |
If an enrollment cannot enter a cohort or group, verify the same school and program, available capacity, an open enrollment and the operator's scope. A group membership does not change the cohort or path. A cohort is optional; do not invent one merely to make an enrollment valid.
For exact machine permissions and phase commands, consult the Cohorts API, Groups API and Enrollments API. Return to the Training guide or read the member journey for the visible result of the full setup.
